Sekhukhune (1814 - 1882), was king of the Marota (or baPedi), in the current Limpopo province of South Africa. He became king upon his father's death in September 1861, and lived at a mountain, now known as Thaba Ya Sekhukhune,[1] which he fortified.
He refused to submit to the ZAR, leading to a war in 1876. He was also in conflict with the British who annexed the republic. The British captured him on 28 November 1879, but he was released after the Pretoria convention and reinstated as king.
He was murdered by his half-brother Mampoer in August 1882. Mampoer was captured and executed in Pretoria.
