Located 196 kilometers south from Asunción, you can get to San Juan Bautista following the Route 1st “Mcal. Francisco Solano López”. It’s settled over a hill.

Climate

In summer, the maximum temperature is of 39 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in winter is of zero degrees Celsius. The annual average is of 21 degrees Celsius.

Demography

With a total area of 2,300 square kilometers, San Juan Bautista has a population of 18,441 habitants, from which 9,281 are males and 9,161 are females according to projections of the General Office of Statistics, Surveys and Censuses. So, this city is the second most populated city after San Ignacio.

History

The establishment of this city was promoved during the government of Carlos Antonio López, declared a small town in 1893 and in 1945 was declared as capital of the department.

Economy

San Juan Bautista is an agricultural and livestock zone. It produces soy, wheat, cotton, rice and corn. Also have important livestock establishments.

Tourism

In the city are present important educational institutions, government institutions, the bishopric and health centers. The church is a Jesuit style relique.

There are springs and streams in the city to appease the summer’s heat. In the Lilly’s Island, in San Cristobal, you can watch the diversity of varieties of these flowers.

During the patron holidays honoring Saint John the Baptist processions, riding on horsebacks, colt taming and bullfights are held. You can also eat the typical foods as the batiburrillo, asado a la estaca and the caburé.

In January is celebrated the party of the Siriki, where diverse typical meals are eaten.

The house of Mangoré, today a museum and a cultural center is very concurred by the tourists.

Transportation

After San Juan Bautista, detouring to the left, an unpaved road goes to Santa María. Another road also goes to the Route 4th and to Pilar in Ñeembucú.

People of San Juan Bautista

Agustín Pío Barrios (Mangoré) was born in San Juan Misiones. He was a famous Paraguayan guitarist.
