The name of the town derived from the Serbian word "knez" ("prince" in English), and the full meaning of the name in English would be "the new place of the prince".
In Serbian, the town is known as Novi Kneževac or Нови Кнежевац, in Romanian as Noul Cnezat, in Hungarian as Törökkanizsa, in Croatian as Novi Kneževac, and in German as Neu-Kanischa.
