At the west end, M-48 passes over I-75 without an interchange. It runs past the freeway, turns north to Pickford and then runs back to an interchange with I-75 at exit 373.
In 1920, M-48 ran from Rudyard to Trout Lake along the current H-40. At Rexton, M-48 turned north to Newberry. In 1949, M-48 was relocated from Rexton to Epoufette to end at US 2. In 1960, M-48 was truncated on the west end back to the current H-63/Mackinac Trail at Rudyard.
