Route description

M-42 is a rural, two-lane highway connecting Manton and Lake City. It runs through wooded terrain. Between Michigan Avenue and the US 131 freeway in Manton, M-42 is concurrently designated with BUS US 131 along Seventh Street in Manton. None of M-42 is part of the National Highway System.

History

In the 1930's, M-42 turned north at Sherman, going through Buckley, Chum's Corners, Traverse City, and stopping at the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula at the Mission Point Light. This stretch of road has been part of M-37 since 1940. In 1951, the only remaining gravel stretch of M-42 from M-66 to Manton was paved.

In June 2007, the stretch of M-42 between M-37 and US 131 was turned back to local control scaling it's length back from 25.76 miles (41.46 km) to just 9.52 miles (15.32 km).[1]
