The company sells security software to fight malicious code on diverse platforms:
F-Secure products for the PC traditionally feature CounterSign, an exclusive anti-virus technology integrating multiple scanning engines for on-access malware and adware identification as well as run-time detection of root kits. F-Secure has OEM agreements with several security vendors to integrate leading detection technology engines in its own offerings, including a long-standing cooperation with Kaspersky Lab, Russia, Frisk of Iceland and sandbox specialist Norman AB. Its products include Kaspersky, Orion, Pegasus and other antivirus engines.
DeepGuard, now in its 2.0 incarnation, is an F-Secure in-house developed HIPS or advanced system monitoring technology, which detects new or unknown malware intrusions based on unusual, suspicious changes in the Windows system and automatically blocks processes caught in the act. The solution featured well in c't magazine's 2008 January comparative test, where it uniquely stopped all 12 tested threats without the use of traditional anti-virus signatures. Deepguard, however is resource intensive and requires fairly strong hardware to work without affecting customer experience (1GHz+ CPU and 512MB RAM or better recommended).
F-Secure's patented workstation side e-mail and web traffic filtering method is an unusual solution, which relies on a wedge-and-pump software module to syphon off traffic from the NDIS layer, before inspecting and re-inserting the content. This venue is theoretically safer than the "local proxy" based solution used by most competitors, but the strictly on-line nature of checks causes time-out issues with large, complex files and attachments on lower-end hardware based systems.
F-Secure is historically related to FRISK Software International, a company based in Iceland, which publishes F-Prot antivirus. The original F-Prot conglomerate of Icelandic, Finnish and American computer antivirus researchers fell apart during the early 1990s and the resulting companies divided the global market. For a while, Data Fellows's product was marketed as "F-Prot Professional". As of 2006, the macro-virus detection capabilities of Frisk's F-Prot scan engine are still present in F-Secure products.
In November 2005, F-Secure purchased ROMmon, an information-technology security group for controlling email spam, system attacks, and network abuse.[1]
In a bundle with Shaw cable internet, customers receive a program made by F-Secure, that is essentially the same as any other F-Secure application. This version isn't well known among many computer users, as it was only released a few years ago.
F-Secure also powers 140 other ISP security suites, such as Charter Communications, Dish Network, Cincinnati Bell, Embarq (formerly Sprint), Liberty Media, Airtel PC-Secure, Cogeco, France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and Optusnet.(F-Secure press room)
In co-operation with Helsinki University of Technology, F-Secure specialist educate future virus analysts in a one semester course, with some material available on-line. [1]
In 2006, F-Secure Anti-Virus was the recipient of the TopTenReviews Bronze Award.
F-Secure Internet Security 2007 won MikroBitti's test of anti-virus software, ahead of Norton, McAfee, Panda and TrendMicro.
F-Secure was Ranked #1 in Consumer Reports 2006 Security Round up.
F-Secure is typically ranked as one of the top security products, see F-Secure website.
