Afdhere Jama

Afdhere Jama (b. 1978) is a Somali-American writer based in San Francisco. His writing has appeared in publications all over the world. He is the founder and editor of Huriyah, a queer Muslim magazine. Born and raised in Somalia, Jama moved to America in his late teens.

Writing

In 2004, a volume of his poetry about early experiences in Somalia was published under the title At Noonday with the Gods of Somalia.^[1] Jama continued to writing in Huriyah and other magazines. In October 2006, Jama was featured along over 100 other queer authors, poets, spiritual leaders and activists in Sodom & Me: Queers on Fundamentalism edited by Greg Wharton and Ian Philips.^[2] In 2007, Michael Luongo's Gay Travels in the Muslim World, for which Jama wrote the foreword, was published.^[3]
