The 9 designation was originally used for the IRT Dyre Avenue Line until it was converted to through service in 1957, though the equipment on the line did not bear numbers; it may have been used for the Dyre Avenue Shuttle, which ran nights and other times when through service did not run, after 1957. The Dyre Avenue Shuttle still runs during late night hours daily, but now carries the same number as the through service on the line, 5.the number 9 service was used in Dyre avenue line 1956-1966.The number 9 train for dyre avenue was discountined in 1966.
The 1/9 skip-stop service was formed on August 21, 1989.[1] Skip-stop service operated north of 137th Street.
Midday skip-stop service was discontinued in 1994, but remained during peak hours.[2] By this time, skip-stop service assigned the following stations to the 1 train only:

After September 11, 2001, 1 trains had to be rerouted since the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line ran directly under the World Trade Center site and was heavily damaged in the collapse of the South Tower. It ran only between 242nd Street and 14th Street, running local north of and express south of 96th Street; the 9 train and skip-stop service were suspended at this time. Service was changed on September 19, after a few switching delays at 96th Street. 1 trains made all local stops from 242nd Street to New Lots Avenue via the Clark Street Tunnel and IRT Eastern Parkway Line, to replace 3 trains, which terminated at 14th Street. 1 trains returned to South Ferry and the skip-stop service was restored on September 15, 2002.[3]
The 9 train and skip-stop service was discontinued completely on May 30, 2005, including the peak hours that had continued since 1994.[4][2] The last day of #9 train on the skip-stop service was on Friday May 27,2005.
