8 Million Ways to Die is a 1986 American action adventure film, the last to be directed by Hal Ashby. The film was the first attempt to adapt the popular Matthew Scudder detective stories of Lawrence Block for the screen. The screenplay was written by Block with help from Oliver Stone. The film starred Jeff Bridges, Rosanna Arquette and Andy Garcia in a leading role for the first time. The story was switched from New York to Los Angeles which changed the tone of the book for many fans. Ashby was fired during shooting, the studio edited the film poorly, then buried it with a limited release.
