4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone is an aromatic ketone (benzophenone) with the formula (HOC6H4)2CO. It can be found as a yellow or off-white powder. 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone is stable under normal temperatures and pressures.
Ph(CO2)Ph → (HOC6H4)2CO
The preparation method of 4,4`dihydroxybenzophenone includes rearranging Ph p-hydroxybenzoate in the presence of catalyst at a molar ratio of 1:(0.1-1) in organic solvent at 70-170C for 3-20 h; separating; and recrystalizing. to obtain 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone, wherein Ph p-hydroxybenzoate is prepared. by acetylating p-hydroxybenzoic acid to generate p-acetoxybenzoic acid; chlorinating to generate p-acetoxybenzoyl chloride; and reacting with phenol and deacetylating to obtain Ph p-hydroxybenzoate.
Benzophenones are used as a starting material for the manufacture of pesticides, drugs, and dyes. the main application of 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone is its use as a UV light stabalizer. It is used extensively in cosmetics, plastics, films, adhesives and coatings, optical fiber, and printed circuit boards. 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone works by absorbing the Ultraviolet radiation and preventing the formation of free radicals.
