Events of 1539

January 12, Treaty of Toledo. Signed by Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor, Spanish King) and Francis I (French King), agreeing to make no further alliances with England. Grew out of the disagreement between Pope Paul III and Henry VIII.
March - Canterbury Cathedral surrenders, and reverts to its previous status of 'a college of secular canons'.
April 27 - Bogotá, Colombia is founded by Nikolaus Federmann and Sebastián de Belalcázar.
May 30 - In Florida, Hernando de Soto lands at Tampa Bay with 600 soldiers with the goal to find gold. He also introduces pigs into North America.
May - The Six Articles, an Act of the Parliament of England, reaffirms certain Catholic principles in Henry VIII's Church of England.

Protestant Reformation: Lutheranism is forcefully introduced to Iceland, despite the opposition of Bishop Jón Arason.
Beaulieu Abbey, Bolton Abbey, Colchester Abbey, St Albans Abbey and St Mary's Abbey, York fall prey to the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
