Lorenzo Mavilis

Lorenzo Mavilis (* 1860; † 1912 in Ithaka) were a scholar, a poet, a parliamentarian and a freedom fighter.

Lorenzo Mavilis revived predominantly Korfu. It studied starting from 1877 law in Athens and lived later for 12 years in Germany, where it its studies among other things in Munich and Freiburg continued. In Freiburg it was member of the Corps Suevia. To its academic subjects also philology and philosophy belonged. Strongly it was affected by the writings by Kant and Schopenhauer. Beyond that Mavilis Sanskrit, Indian, latin, German, Italian, French, English and Spanish learned. As a poet it wrote 58 Sonnets, Novels and was comprehensively active as translators. Its dichterisches work is assigned to the ionischen school. It translated the works of Goethe, Schiller, Uhland, Byron, Schelley Tennyson, Dante and Leopardi. 1896 it participated as a Freiwilliger in the revolution on Crete and was wounded. Starting from 1910 he was a parliament delegate for Korfu. Mavilis fell in War of 1912 in Drisco, Ionnia.
