Kunoy

Kunoy [ˈkuːnɪ] „woman island “(Danish: Kunø) is one of the 18 Islands of the Färöer and belongs there to the geographical region of the six North islands.

The island is the counterpart to the neighbour island lain west Kalsoy, „the man island “. Both are by the strait Kalsoyarfjørður from each other separated, and both consist in each case of a ridge, which extends from northwest to southeast.

That Place Kunoy (80 Ew.) is located at the steep west coast of the island of the same name. Since 1988 exists a tunnel, to that the place also Haraldssund (77 Ew.) at the east coast connects. Both together form those Municipality Kunoy.

On Kunoy there was in former times a third place: Skarð at the east coast. It was given up, as all men of the place 1913 when fishing in distress turned out and drowned.

The legend tells that the characteristic Basalt stages at a mountain-slope of the island the casting of the planks that Ark Noah represent, which is to have landed here. Certainly such a plank was never found, which could support that.

Traffic route

Kunoy is by an embankment with Haraldssund with the neighbour island Borðoy in the east connected. Those Buslinie 504 operated regularly on the distance Klaksvík-Ánir- Haraldssund Kunoy (place) and replaces with it the ferry, which served in former times the island in the public passenger traffic.
