Life

Böhmler visited first starting from 1961 the Werkschule Pforzheim. From 1963 to 1968 it completed an art study at the academies of arts Stuttgart and Duesseldorf and was pupil of Joseph Beuys. Its first well-known work Pinocchio originates from the year 1969. From 1974 to 2005 he was a professor at that University for screen end of arts Hamburg.

Böhmler was one of the first artists in Germany, who were interested in modern techniques of the picture reproduction. By simply asking for the mechanisms of the technology and by playing with the possibilities of the medium he makes attentive on rules and functions, which escape the perception otherwise usually. Its handling radio, cassette device, camera, film or video camera is ironical.

„In its Readymades from screen fragments (‚electronic note book `, 1993/94) and Radiocollagen (‚mute pasteboards `, 1993/94) Böhmler covers for that according to the principle Disassembly the mechanisms of suggestiven medium practice up. It divides it into its components and combines it to new, partly amusing-grotesque, partly low-intimate-ironical multimedia objects. The alleged clarity of the familiar consumer article becomes so surprising ambiguity, to whose mental decoding the recipient is requested. “ [1]

In Böhmlers to pictures and objects comes to the use of language as comment, explanation or wordplay a central role. The language as basis of communication is for it the medium of highest authenticity. In addition, its investigation always aims here the actual sense content of the words, sentences and terms.

„The manipulation by and in the pictures, the relationship of its and light, which advances toward clearly here, the relationship of picture and world as well as of original and copy therefore brings up for discussion Böhmler in its work in various way: writing, talking, acting, drawing and designing. The designs, installations and objects show the things, how they are real or how it outside of their traditional employment to be seen to be able. Schmunzelnd becomes clear the viewer of the work, as the electronic media determine our perception, which smear relationship to the reality and finally overlay the material. “[2]
